Bhubaneswar: BJDís three-time MLA from Boudh Pradip Amat was unanimously elected as the new Speaker of the 14th Orissa Legislative Assembly on Monday. Pro tem Speaker V Sugnana Kumari Deo formally announced Amatís name at the presence of the BJD MLAs, including Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and Opposition members in the assembly.
Earlier Naveen read out the name of Amat for the coveted post which was supported by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Raghunath Mohanty. The chief minister along with the treasury and opposition bench members congratulated Amat, a former minister, after he was declared as the Speaker. ďI would carry out my responsibilities as Speaker with utmost dedication, sincerity and honesty. It is my honour to get the prestigious chair,Ē Amat said.
Election of the Speaker came close on the heels of the oath taking ceremony of the elected members in the assembly. It also coincided with the election of Bhupinder Singh as the new Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader to spearhead the Opposition in the house.
Amat earned the distinction of becoming the 17th Speaker of Orissa Assembly. Amat succeeded his party colleague Kishore Kumar Mohanty, who was defeated in the 2009 Assembly election.
It was a unanimous election as no other political party announced its candidate for the Speakerís post. In the 2009 assembly poll, the BJD won 103 of the 147 Assembly seats thereby forming the government on its own in the state.
