New Delhi: Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) directed the Orissa Government to stop all work related to Posco. The ministry in its direction to the State government has said to stop all land acquisition process in forest and non-forest areas. It has also asked the state government to report it at the earliest about the action taken in this regard.
"The team's conclusion is that any work related to the project in the area is a violation of the FRA and of the conditions laid down by the ministry in its forest clearance issued last year," the Environment Ministry's order which was issued on Friday said. Reacting to this Orissa CM Naveen Patnaik says he will write to PM Manmohan Singh on this regard.
It should be noted that a joint committee of Ministry of Environment and Forests and Ministry of Tribal Affairs, who had recently visited the Posco site to inspect the alleged violations of Forest Rights Act (FRA), had suggested that the Orissa government should stop all work for the project, including land acquisition.
Earlier, the committee had concluded that any work related to the Posco project at the site is a violation of FRA as laid down in the MoEF's July 2009 circular before the forest land was acquired for the project.
