Report by Dipti Ranjan Kanungo , Bhubaneswar: The state government has decided for direct recruitment of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSPs) from next year .It has been decided by the state government in a meeting chaired by the chief secretary Bijay Kumar Patnaik.
The state government has asked the Orissa Public Service Commission (OPSC) to finalize recruitment policy following which Orissa Police Service (OPS) examination would be conducted through OPSC.
The state government would recruit 15 DSPs every year and has increased the sanctioned posts from 197 to 404.
According to reports, there are 188 IPS posts in state cadre out of which 131 recruits are under direct IPS category and remaining 57 officers are promotee IPS posts.
As minimum eight years experience is necessary for a DSP to be elevated as SP before attaining 58, no officer has fulfilled the criteria following which the said number of posts are lying vacant compounding the woes of state government. Apart from this 31 IPS posts are lying vacant in the state.
It may be recalled that direct recruitment of DSPs through Orissa Police Service Examination was discontinued since 1976 .
