Report by Pravuprasad Routray; Bhubaneswar: Orissa Government to provide new ration cards for each family soon. This was announced by Food supplies and consumer welfare minister Sarada Prasad Nayak on Saturday at the state assembly.
He said that the state government has decided to provide ration cards to all households soon if the Centre makes further delay in finalising the norms for selection of BPL families.
Denying the Opposition allegation that the state government is responsible for the delay finalisation of the BPL list as per 2002 household survey, the minister said that the Centre was in the process of formulating fresh guidelines for the selection of BPL families since 2009.
The state could not finalise a BPL list as per the 2002 survey following restriction from the Supreme Court.
After the Supreme Court vacated the stay on the preparation of a fresh BPL list, the Centre asked the state to wait for the new guidelines for the selection of BPL beneficiaries.
The state government has nothing to do with the delay, he said.
Chief minister Naveen Patnaik will take a decision soon on the issue of ration cards to all the households if there is further delay in the finalisation of BPL guidelines by the Centre, Nayak said.
The ministerís reply was in response to the Opposition allegation that the state government is deliberately delaying the finalisation of BPL list as per the 2002 survey.
Leader of the Opposition Bhupinder Singh and Congress chief whip Prasad Harichandan alleged that there was no hindrance for the state government to issue APL card to genuine poor families who are not covered under the BPL category.
