Report by Ronalisa Parida, Berhampur: In a special meeting of BMC (Berhampur Municipal Corporation) under the chairmanship of Ganajm Sub collector Dr. Ajit Mishra, it has been decided to shift the Old bus stand from its earlier place here on Wednesday. Arguments raised over the issue due to increased traffic problems in the middle part of the city.
Demanding immediate shifting of the Old bus stand the members of BMC have stated that the rising population in the city is emerging daily traffic problems in the middle of the city (old bus stand). As the area is now under the supervision of the municipal corporation, the bus stand should be shifted without delay and new projects can be executed at the place, they added.
Although it has been stressed earlier to run the OSRTC passenger vehicles from the New Bus stand, as per said by the DTM due to lack of adequate space at the new bus stand, it is not possible to run both the Government and private buses from a same place. Adding into that he has notified “ there will not be any delay for the shifting of the stand, if proper land will be allotted soon by the administration and the revenue department. As assured by the Collector at least 5 acres or more land will be allotted at the outskirts of the city near the Sai temple at Mandiapalli or at Haladiapadara.
The M.L.A of BMC Dr. Ramesh Chandra Patnaik, Mayor Siva Sankar Das, Tahasildar Satrughna Kara, S.D.P.O Sarat Mahapatro, Municipal Corporation executive engineer Asim Mishra and DTM were the administrative authorities present at the meeting.
It can be noted that the Baraccas bus stand had been established from the time of British rule when 4-5 private buses were running from the stand. Later with the establishment of ORT company on the year 1951 the passenger vehicles were started leaving from the old bus stand. At the same time the new bus stand had been made only to run the private buses those travel inside and outside the city.
