The Odisha government on Friday decided to increase 100 seats in the MBBS stream in each of the three state-run medial colleges in Cuttack, Berhampur and Burla.
Briefing newsmen after presiding over a high-level meeting at the State Secretariat here, chief secretary Bijay Kumar Patnaik said that a formal proposal for increasing seats in the MBBS courses would be submitted to the Medical Council of India (MCI) soon.
He said the decision to increase the MBBS seats was taken for creating more medical professionals without depending on the private medical colleges.
He said that since the increase of seats is linked with necessary infrastructure and man power, it has been decided to provide Rs150 crore to each medical college for development of infrastructure facilities like buildings and procurement of medical equipments and to create additional posts in teaching faculties.
After the strengthening the infrastructures, the state government would write to the Centre to examine the state’s proposal.
Besides, the MCI would be requested to visit the medical colleges for their assessment and clearance, the chief secretary added.
