Sambalpur: The Hirakud Dam Project authorities have decided to release the first floodwater of the current monsoon from the reservoir on Tuesday.
The decision has been taken by observing rains in the upstream, particularly in the neighbouring State of Chhattisgarh.
At present, the water level in the reservoir stands at 599.95 feet against the maximum level of 630 feet.
The inflow and outflow in the reservoir remain 75,000 and 25,000 cusecs, respectively, the dam control room sources said.
To keep the reservoir in a safe position, the authorities have decided to release the extra water since by the rule curve the level needs to remain at 590 feet on August 1.
The dam authorities have appealed to the public to keep the entire downstream and riverbed clear to avoid any eventuality due to release of the floodwater. Last year, the first floodwater was released on July 27.
