Bhubaneswar: Union Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) experts' team visits Posco project area on Tuesday. The team led by the K Ray Paul visited the villages comprising the project site and held talks with the locals.
The visited the site to assess afresh the impact of the project on the environment. The team visited Noliasahi, Gadakujanag, Nuagaon and Gobindapur before going to the proposed captive port site at Jatadhara river mouth to see the felling of tress and the sand dunes in the project site. It also inspected the mangrove forest near Voscali at the south gate of the Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) site.
The team was formed by the MoEF after the National Green Tribunal suspended the environment clearance granted to Posco's mega steel project on January 31, 2011 due to faulty environment impact assessment and directed the MoEF for a fresh review by sending a high-level expert team.
The other committee members were SR Wate, Director of National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), R Ramesh, Director of the National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management (NCSCM) and RD Singh, Director of the National Institute of Hydrology.
