Odisha: Gram Panchyat Chief, two others held
Saturday, September 29, 2012

Report by Kishore Dash & Deba Prasad  Dash, Malkangiri: In a rare incident, the police have arrested one Bikram Kirsani, the Sarpanch of Badural Gram Panchyat under Khairput Block along with two other locals, Sunu Pangi and Laxman Sisha today whom the police picked up outside the DRDA Conference Hall on Thursday alleging their nexus with the outlawed Left Wing Extremists.

Police who were waiting outside for a trap, nabbed Kirsani along with two others soon they came out of the District Rural Development Conference Hall here on Thursday after attending a meeting convened by district administration on ‘Gram Sabha Shashaktikaran Karyakrama’ which is likely to be  launched  from October 2, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

About seven Gram Panchyat Chiefs including Krisani were detained by the cops in the police station here and the police officials interrogated them till late night, sources said.Today, the police released all others except Bimram Kirsani, Sunu Pangi and Laxman Sisha.

But, the Superintendent of Police Akhileswar Singh  has his own logic behind the arrest of GP Chief and two others. All the three were involved in Puraiguda encounter and murder of Gangadhar Chalan of Atalguda few months back, Singh said. While, Krisani’s motorcycle was used by the rebels for the killing of Chalan, Laxman Sisha was working for the Maoists as a militia. Basing on the information revealed by the GP Chief, the cops today recovered one pistol, some wires and two tiffin bombs from the Badural area, Singh added.

On the other, the arrest of the Krisani has sparked off wide spread resentment among the PR representatives across Khairput panchyat samiti who in a letter to the Director-General of Police Prakash Mishra, Panchyat Raj Commissioner and District Magistrate have threatened to  boycott ‘Gram Sabha Shashaktikaran Karyakrama’ to be launched from October 2 protesting the police action elected PR representatives.

It was quite unfortunate on the part of the police to torture the three during detention, the letter stated.
