Odisha:Youth congress leaders' demand  arrest  of MLA Bishnu Das on Kujang fire cracker explosion issue

Report by Amarnath Parida, Jagatsinghpur:  Dalit leaders and activists of District Youth Congress on Friday demonstrated agitation for demanding the arrest of local MLA Bishnu Das and other BJD leader culprits involved in the much-hyped Kujang bomb blast incident that claimed lives of four Dalits and led to commitment of suicide of another person. Irate people burnt the effigy of Das in front of district collectoratre.

 Sources said that four people were killed and other four were injured in the cracker blast case while they were bursting crackers and dancing to music when the blast took place in the mini-truck, causing injuries to its occupants on 16th Nov’2011. Crackers exploded in a procession of Biju Workers’ Union rally.

Kujang police had registered the case against Cuttack-Barbati MLA Debashish Samantray, Sahadev Samantray, Gobinda Nayak and Sarada Mohapatra under sections 147, 148, 337 and 338 and 34 of IPC and section 9 of Indian Explosive Act. Local legislator Das who was advisor of this union and took major role to conduct rally has been ignored and no case has yet registered against him and former school and mass education minister Mr Pratap Jena.

Three injured victims are now struggling for their lives. Dalit leaders led by chairman of Congress SC cell Mr Debendra Mallick and youth leader Mr Sarada Acharya submitted a memorandum to Governor through district collector. They stated that the police have taken no effective action against the culprits involved in the case and ruling BJD MLAs Pratap Jena, Bishnu Das and Debasis Samantray have been excluded from the police investigation. The police, even after lapse of a year, have failed to file charge-sheet.

Youth and dalit leaders also pointed out that the families of the four Dalit persons who died in this incident that took place during a trade union procession at Kujang on November 16, 2011, are yet to receive financial assistance from the Sate Government. An injured person, Pramod Jena, recently committed suicide owing to financial problems of his family.

Chairman of Naugaon panchyat samiti Mrs Arunabala Mallick, and dalit leaders Sankar Kandi, Basant Sethy, Pabani Bhoi and others participated on today’s agitation and mass rally.
