Dr. Arun Kumar Rath received Odisha Living Legend Award
Report by Odisha Diary bureau, Bhubaneswar: OdishaDiary the Leading web-portal on Odisha Conferred the prestigious Odisha Living Legend Award for 2013 to Dr. Arun Kumar Rath. Dr. Rath received the Odisha Living Legend Award in Excellence in Promoting Education category.
Prof Arun Kumar Rath is a leading policy maker, an outstanding educator, writer and above all a visionary institution builder. During his distinguished career as a civil servant in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) spanning over three decades, Dr. Rath made significant contributions in various fields of Indian administration. While on deputation to the Food Corporation of India as the Head of Odisha Region Dr Rath’s work was commended for placing Odisha in the national map in food procurement and infrastructure development in the State. As Joint Secretary Department of Public Enterprises and as Additional Secretary Ministry of Steel Government of India, he made immense contribution towards better governance and social responsibility of Indian public sector enterprises.
As Secretary to Govt. of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Dr. Rath contributed to enactment of the long-awaited Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act 2009, which has been hailed as landmark legislation in independent India. Dr Rath played an exemplary role in shaping the School of Public Policy and Governance at MDI Gurgaon and the Centre for Corporate Governance and Social Responsibility at International Management Institute New Delhi as its Chairman.
Dr Rath is a prolific writer in English and Odia. His book “Towards Better Corporate Governance: Independent Directors in the Boardroom” based upon his path finding doctoral research has been highly acclaimed. His outstanding Odia book “Antarctica Diary O Anyanya Bhraman Kahani ”containing twenty four travel stories based upon his travels to the ice continent and other exciting destinations around the world has been hailed as a masterpiece of Odia literature
OdishaDiary acknowledges Prof Rath’s excellent contribution as a civil servant, educator, writer and institution builder. The Living Legend Award takes special note of his commendable institution building work at MDI Gurgaon and at International Management Institute (IMI), New Delhi and his visionary work for the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, popularly known as RTE Act 2009 which has empowered every child of India to demand and receive education as a fundamental right said OdishaDiary Editor-in-Chief Rashmi Ranjan Parida.
The Award Function was held on 13 November 2013 at Jaydev Bhawan to celebrate the occasion of 9th Foundation Day of OdishaDiary. The ceremony was graced by leading public figures, intellectuals and social activists notably Dr. Damodar Rout, Hon’ble Minister of Health & Family Welfare and MSME; Dr. Prasanna Patsani, Hon’ble MP; Prof B.C. Tripathy, leading scientist and Vice Chancellor of Ravenshaw University.
In her welcome address, Executive Editor Ms. Prachee Naik requested everyone to stand in solidarity with Phailin victims and maintain one minute silence to pay respect to the departed soul of legendary musician Raghunath Panigrahi. Her speech provided a glimpse to the chequered history of OdsihaDiary and how it has emerged to become the No.1 webportal of the state.
Speaking on the occasion MP Dr. Prasanna Patsani appreciated OdishaDiary’s consistent effort to provide news and views on a regular basis and connecting Pravasi Odias with their roots. Dr Pratibha Ray spoke of the need to revive interest in Odia language and encouraged the OdishaDiary team to do good work through the Odia language news site Odishan.com. Dr. Hejmadi spoke on the need of popularising both scientific spirit and our unique culture, Prof Tripathy advocated inclusion in education and urged the young generation to dream for a better future through education and skills development. The event saw large scale participation of students, journalists and common public who came to see and listen to the galaxy of leaders and achievers.
Ashok Palit, leading cine critic and Senior Editor of OdishaDiary gave the vote of thanks. He thanked the guests for gracing the occasion to award the winners; the awardees for doing great work in their respective fields; to the media fraternity for their continued participation, support and coverage and last but not least to the OD team.

It should be noted that Odisha Living Legend Awards was established by OdishaDiary (OD) in 2011, to acknowledge and honour great contributions to the state of Odisha. The Odisha Living Legend awardees in 2013 as in the past were nominated and/or selected by a committee/team of experts constituted by the OdishaDiary. When required the members of the “Awards Committee” undertook field visits to get firsthand knowledge of achievements claimed by a reader/nominator/awards committee in support of their entry for the award. OD team conducted extensive telephonic conversation with independent panel members located in India and abroad to prepare a final list.
