Day-Care centres to aid hemophilia patients in Odisha
Report by Odisha Diary bureau, Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has taken steps to set up day-care centres for hemophilia patients in three state-run medical college hospitals and the Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar even as a register of such patients was being prepared, a senior hematologist said on Wednesday.

Hemophilia is the manifestation of a group of hereditary genetic disorders that impair the body’s ability to control blood clotting or coagulation required to stop bleeding when an injury occurs.
Addressing a gathering of around 200 hemophilia patients from all over the state at the SOA University, Dr. Sudha Sethy, Assistant Professor of Clinical Hematology at the SCB Medical College Hospital, Cuttack, said the government would be preparing a register of such patients.
“Depending on which district had the highest number of such patients, another day-care centre would be set up in that district,” she said.
As the disease had no cure, it could be controlled with regular infusions of the deficient clotting factor, she said adding genetic counseling and pre-natal diagnosis would also help in tackling the problem.
The state-level ‘Hemophilia Treatment and Awareness Camp’ was organized by the Bhubaneswar chapter of Hemophilia Society. Prof. D.K.Ray, Dean of Institute of Medical Sciences and Sum Hospital, the faculty of medicine of SOA University and Prof. P.K.Mohanty, Medical Superintendent of Sum Hospital attended the program as guests.
Prof. Ray said that the hematology department set up at Sum Hospital was making rapid strides and the hospital had become the first in the state to undertake Bone Marrow Transplantation recently. Besides, a blood separation unit had also been set up in the hospital.
Prof. Mohanty promised the patients that with the authorization of the Hemophilia Society, the Sum Hospital would extend cheap or free treatment to hemophilia patients. The Society’s secretary Mr. Chiitaranjan Das also spoke.
