Report by Basant Rath; Nabarangpur: The Martyrs Day in memory of the unforgettable massacre at Papadahandi, Sahid Divas was observed at Saheed Pitha today. Nabarangpur collector Ms.Yamini Sarangi, presided over the meeting and paid homage to the freedom fighters who died during the freedom struggle.
Vice-Chairman of Orissa Planning Board Surendra nath Naik, was the chief guest, while Minister Sports & youth affairs Ramesh Chandra Majhi, MP, Pradeep Majhi, MLAs, Bhujabala Majhi, Monahar Randhari, Subash Gond , SP Brajesh Kumar Roy, Former MP, Bhagban Majhi, Dolo Govind Pradhan, Managing Trustee of Maa Ghara, Smt. Rutupurna Mohanty, were the guest of honour paid tribute to the martyrs who laid down their lives during the freedom struggle, and spoke at the function of Papadahandi Saheed pitha.
During the “Quit India Movement” on 24th August 1942, on the bank of river Toori, Papadahandi the barbaric action of the British police crossed all limits as they opened fire on a peaceful processions killing at least 19 known and many other unknown martyrs lost their lives. Hundreds arrested and unknown number of people washed away in the-flood water of Toori River which coined as another “Jalliwanawalabagh massacre” incident. To pay homage to the martyrs who had been killed by the British Police forces during the Quit India Movement every year Saheed Divas being celebrated at Papadahandi to commemorate the day.
