Report by Orissadiary correspondent; Bhubaneswar: Production of foodgrains in the State this year is expected to increase to 10 million tonnes, according to an official in the Directorate of Agriculture. Director of Agriculture Arabinda Padhee is the prime mover of a sustainable agricultural growth in the State, which was all along dubbed as the most backward so far agriculture production and productivity was concerned. Orissa is now on the top of mechanisation of agriculture in the country, and use of fertiliser has grown at a much faster pace, said the official. “Within the last two years, the use of fertiliser has increased from 47 kilogram per acre to 62 kilogram,” he said. Now, the State is harping on the system of rice intensification (SRI) method of rice cultivation, which has picked up very well in various parts. Taking the help of the Pani panchayats and the Self Help Groups (SHGs), there is a move to set up system of rice intensification groups for facilitating the process, the official added.
