Bhubaneswar: Tata Steel will support the state government’s mid-day meal (MDM) programme in Ganjam district.
As an endeavour in that direction, the company has donated Rs 68.60 lakh to the Naandi Foundation for developing infrastructure of the programme.
General Manager of Gopalpur Project of Tata Steel AK Ojha handed over a cheque of this amount to Naandi Foundation director Leena Joseph on June 6 in the presence of Ganjam district collector Kishan Kumar and other senior district-level officials.
The fund would be used for developing infrastructure, procurement of cooking and distribution vessels for operating a centralised kitchen system under the mid-day meal programme.
The initiative is likely to create infrastructure for an additional 10,000 to 15,000 school students in the district.
With the free midday meal scheme, a great deal can be achieved with regard to the child education and health. The programme promotes participation of the child in school and fosters social and gender equality as all children get the same quality food. Besides, the nutritional status of schoolchildren in the district is expected to improve further with Tata Steel’s initiative.
