Report by OD bureau, Bhubaneswar: A one day seminar, first of its kind was organized by CII in association with Director of Factories and Boilers, Government of Odisha and PCI India on 28 June 2012 at Hotel New Marrion, Bhubaneswar. The seminar was held under the chairmanship of Shri A C Padhiary, IAS, Labour Commissioner, Govt. of Odisha.
The other dignitaries present on the occasion include Shri H S Mohanty, Director of Factories and Boilers, Government of Odisha, Mr. O B Krishna Chairman, Safety Task Force, CII Eastern Region & Chief - Corporate Safety, Tata Steel Limited, Mr M K Gupta, Vice Chairman-CII Odisha State Council, Mr Lokesh Kr Ray Co-Chairman, Safety Task Force CII Eastern Region & Director, Joy Mining Services India Pvt Ltd, Dr Ambika Nanda, State Programme Manager, UNDP, Mr Jiban Mahapatra, AGM- Environment NALCO.
The main focus is on three different objectives:
(i) The maintenance and promotion of worker's health and working capacity;
(ii) The improvement of working environment and work to become conducive to safety and health.
(iii) Initiation of disaster management and business continuity plans.
There is a need to preserve the good health of workmen by ensuring safe and healthy working conditions and provide prompt compensation on account of injuries and occupational diseases.
There were three sessions on Industrial Safety and Occupational Health, Behavioral Safety and Ergonomics and Disaster Management Session.
The Labour Commissioner said that Good safety management is more than just a legal and moral requirement. Around the world, there is growing recognition that safety management systems can improve the operating performance and profits of a Company as well as its safety defenses. Director of Factories and Boilers added that due to lack of Safety, sometimes not just the business but also the industries themselves have perished.
The seminar was attended by around 75 delegates from 30 industries of the state of versatile backgrounds and several Government Invitees.
