Odisha: Endoscopic Spinal disc surgery makes great stride in field of surgery
Wednesday, August 08, 2012

Report by OD bureau; Bhubaneswar: Spinal and sciatica surgey for the patients suffering from acute back pain or all varieties of disc prolapsed from central to far lateral and foraminal disc and lumber canal stenosis – single to multiple can now be easily addressed with the help of ‘Endospine’. This instrument follows the standard surgical techniques as posterior approach for lumber discectomy.

The patients with severe spinal cord problem can be operated on without having nerve injury. “With advent of technique of investigations like M.R.I, the cause of back pain is easily diagnosed with cent percent accuracy.” Says Dr. P. C Dey, Joint Arthroscopy & Endospine Surgon. With all advantages of endoscope like illumination and small incision, this instrument has nerve root reactor specially to care of the nerve during surgery to avoid the greatest tension and fear for the surgeon as well as for the patients, adds Dr. Dey.

Endoscopy is making great strides in many medical and surgical field.  Endospine is the origin concept  of “Minimally Invasive Surgery.” One can thus perform endoscopic surgeries with small incisions, resulting in minimally invasive procedures for the patients and a short hospital stay.

The use of an endoscope in Destandau’s technique allows the same access port and the same surgical technique as open surgery to be used on the vertebral canal and disc, while at the same time reducing the skin incision and overall approach-related tissue trauma. This technique consists of making a very small incision through which a camera is introduced that light up the area to be operated and allows visualization on the television screen.

So, complete surgery can be performed with a small incision without any stitch & blood loss and the patient can back home on the next day of operation. Disc prolapsed from central to far lateral and foraminal disc  and lumber canal stenosis can be addressed with the help of Endospine.

Dr. P C Dey who has taken intensive training under direct guidance of the pioneer of this technique Dr, Jean Destandau in France, has successfully operated on 350 patients in Odisha which is a landmark. Dr. Dey who runs his own clinic in Bhubaneswar is providing this medical service to the poor and deserving patients at very nominal prices.

Dr. Dey, the eminent endospine surgon have been performing this technically demanding procedure for last 16 years in Bhubaneswar. The latest technology-‘Destandau Technique’, used by him gives the aesthetic benefit, minimal tissue handling reduces the post operative pain and allows for rapid resumption of normal physical activities including sports. There are few hands in India who has expertise to use this technical know-how and only in Odisha in eastern part of India.

Dr. Dey has opined that the days are gone when patients had to travel to major cities of  our country to get this operation done. The patients are now become confident of doing their operations here as the results are the same and much cheaper than any place in India.
