Keonjhar: Two Maoists, a woman and her younger brother, surrendered before police in Keonjhar district on Monday as they were disillusioned with functioning of the ultras, police said. Janaki Sayan alias Tulsi (35) and Sadhu Sayan (30) of Totasahi village surrendered before DIG of Police (Western Range) Yashwant Jethwa here.
Both the rebels were active members of Kalinganagar Maoist division and operated in Keonjhar, Jajpur and nearby areas, Jethwa and Keonjhar Superintendent of Police Ashis Kumar Singh said.
Janaki, who had been working as a woman commander of Kalinganagar Maoist division since 2007, was involved in several criminal cases including attack on police patrol party in 2010 and torching of liquor shops in Telkoi and other areas, he said. She was also engaged in wooing women into the Maoist outfit and strengthening the cadre in the region.
Sadhu was functioning as a messenger for Kalinganagar Maoist division secretary and working to attract more and more people into the Maoist fold, police said.
The duo decided to give up the path of violence as they were disillusioned with the functioning of Maoists and felt the naxals had deviated from ideology, they said.
Their father Sushil Sayan, who was active in Maoist backed Biplabi Chasi Mulia Sangathan, is now in jail after being nabbed by police, they said. The ultras would be given all facilities and benefits provided under the rehabilitation policy meant for naxals who surrender, Jethwa said.
