Cuttack: The Odisha High Court on Wednesday stepped in to slap an interim stay on the state government’s proposal to amalgamate the pediatric wing of SCB Medical College and Hospital with the Sishu Bhavan here.
A Division Bench of Justice BP Das and Justice Indrajit Mahanti taking up an affidavit filed by an advocate in pursuance to an earlier PIL ordered that the merger proposal of both the child healthcare units shall not come into effect without the leave of the court. The High Court also made it clear that the admission of patients in the pediatric unit of the SCB hospital shall continue as usual without any hiccups.
No staff or doctors from the unit shall be transferred until further orders, the Bench said in its order.
The state government had recently taken a decision to this effect which faced massive criticism from people in general and opposition political parties in particular. While the Sishu Bhavan here is dogged with myriad inherent problems and patients from here are regularly referred to the SCB hospital, the decision to close the pediatric unit of the hospital was nothing but a crude joke, felt the experts and had vowed to protest the merger of the units.
