Report by Priyabrata Nayak; Bhubaneswar: A nine year old girl crushed to death as a compound wall toppled over her, leaving at least three persons injured including father of the deceased. This incident took place today morning at Rental colony of Kudiari bazar, half a kilometer away from Jatni railway station of Khurda district.
The deceased identified as Rukshana beghum a student of 5th standard of a local primary school at Jatni. While Rukshna died on the spot, injured persons immediately rushed to a nearby hospital and later shifted to capital hospital here. Among the injured, condition of one stated to be critical. An eyewitness said about 9.30 am Rukshana with her father Sameer khan (35) moving towards the school. Behind them her uncle Hamid khan and another guy were on a moped. It was raining incessantly.
All of a sudden the railway compound wall which is a partition between railway track and road, collapsed over them. Rukshana struck beneath debris and died on the spot. As this news spread, hundreds of locals came to streets and blocked the railway movement and also protest at Khurda-Jatni road. Tension became out of control when hours after the incident no officials came to take stock of the situation.
Manoj pattnaik, a local resident said, today a innocent girl lost her life only due to the lackadaisical attitude of the railway authority. Because this boundary wall is at least 40 year old. It became a threat to the commuters here. So that number of times we beseeched railway authorities to demolish it and construct a newer one. But they always turned a deaf year to us. Some senior police officials rushed to the spot and assured compensation. Due to protest several express and passenger trains came to stand still for five hours. Effort to contact concerned authorities could not be materialized.
