Saregama released a non-film album- 'Rewind'

Report by Santanu Ganguly; New Delhi: Saregama released a non-film album- “Rewind”  but the unique thing about this album is that its members are well established in Bollywood,I am sending herewith  the CD request if you can review  or do a story on the same.
Band Called Nine comprises of a power packed team: it is led by award winning journalist, author, Bollywood script-writer and lyricist Neelesh Misra.        Its lead vocalist is accomplished Bollywood singer Shilpa Rao. Neelesh and Shilpa are credited with some huge Bollywood hits over the past several years (see profile). Amartya Rahut is the music composer. Its musicians are some of the finest in the music business.

In the city of Indore, home to some of Bollywood’s names, 21-year-old listener Shrina Vaidik, who usually downloads music like millions of other youth around the world, bought a CD this week for the first time in her life.

An entire generation of Indians has grown up without ever having bought a CD, a trend that is killing physical sales of CDs in the music business. But many across India are buying CDs because they are enamored by the sound of a new band, “Band Called Nine”, which has brought together well-known Bollywood artistes who have successfully attempted a unique concept of storytelling-and-song, combining the traditional craft of “qissagoi” or “dastaangoi” and contemporary, young music.

“I have never thought about it (piracy) since no one told me about these issues. I have always downloaded music from internet and never purchased any CD,” said Vaidik, who is pursuing her Chartered Accountancy exam, in a Facebook wall comment.  “This is my 1st CD I have purchased in my life because the music is too good and the CD is a collector’s item for me.”

“Stupendibulously fantabulouly mindblowing... I will surely get my own original CD and I will ask my other friends to collect it,” Gurgaon-based listener Ankuj Ghosh wrote on Facebook as a reaction to a “Rewind” promo (http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=10150164384987704)

Band Called NINE is India's first writer-led band, which brings together established Bollywood artistes creating music which reflects the soul of modern India in its writing, compositions and themes. Its songs reflect our aspirations and angst. It shrugs off heartbreak and deals with longing in a very contemporary way; it dives into nostalgia; it is conversational and interactive.

From a college canteen to the doorstep in a forgotten homeland, its writing captures the aspirations of small towns, dreams of the metropolis, the changing face of the new India and the values of the old.

“At a time when India’s music business is facing  serious threat from piracy, the only way to start winning back listenership is by innovating at the level of content or technology,” said Neelesh Misra, the creative director and lyricist of the band who has also narrated the 30-minute story that binds the band. “We don’t know technology, but we know content. So we innovated at that level and created the storytelling and song concept, a first ever for an Indian band. The response is, well, mindboggling and very humbling.”

Shilpa Rao added: “The last band I had was in school and now cut to Band Called Nine, but still felt like school. Fun was the keyword. Working with all the band members was like a picnic in a music studio where I was doing a job I love, music.”
The album is available in music stores across India.
“It has been a very enriching experience being part of Band Called Nine, especially while composing the songs, as I had complete freedom to do whatever sounded good musically,” said Amartya Rahut. “Neelesh and I form a very good composer-lyricist team, and we work on instinct and work fast. Hope people will appreciate and like our effort.”

Adarsh Gupta-Music Business Head of Saregama described the album as, “A perfect example how a debut band has managed to garner such amazing appeal & reviews in such a short span of time. This reflects on the changing approach of listeners who irrespective of genre are appreciating good content. Great work by Neelesh, Shilpa and Amartya on the album”
