Bhubaneswar: Looters in the city decamped with silver jewellery worth lakhs after committing burglary at the Lalchand Jewellers in the heart of the capital.
The commissionerate police said the incident took place between 4 and 4.30 am when the security guards were either resting or engrossed in chatting on the backside of the building that houses the shop on the Mastercanteen squire, close to the railway station. The action of the looters, though caught in the CCTV cameras positioned outside the shop, was daring, similar to that committed recently at a computer shop at Sahid Nagar that took place after 6 am.
The footage pointed to four to five persons involved in the act. They were suspected to have carried away the booty in two sacks and confidently left the place.
Sniffer dog squad along with a scientific team on the day tried in vain to trace the thieves. The dogs went up to the railway Platform No 2 and came back, indicating that the thieves might have by some train. An FIR has been lodged with the Kharavelnagar police who hope the CCTV camera footage would lead them to the looters. But people wondered that it happened despite the presence of 10 security men who guard the jewellery complex.
