Report by OD bureau; Bhubaneswar: Acclaimed sand artist Sudarshan Patnaik congratulates Badminton player Saina Nehwal for winning bronze medal in London Olympic. Patnaik said to Odishadiary that, "Saina Nehwal brought laurels for the India. It is matter of pride for all Indian."
To congratulate Saina Nehwal for his unique achievement Patnaik created sand animation for her in Puri. It should be noted that Saina Nehwal on Saturday clinch the bronze medal in the women's single event at the Olympic Games in London.
She clinching a bronze under fortuitous circumstances as her opponent and world number two Xin Wang of China conceded the third-place play off match due to a knee injury after winning the first game. The fourth seeded Indian had saved four game points in a dramatic fightback and was 18-20 when left-handed Xin twisted her knee while going for an acrobatic smash from the baseline and took on-court treatment for the injury.
Saina thus became the first Indian badminton player to win a medal at the Olympic Games. A Khel Ratna award winner, Nehwal burst into the scene at the age of 16 when she helped India get team bronze in 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.
Saina Nehwal is the first Indian woman to reach the singles quarterfinal stage at the Olympics (2008 Olympics). Nehwal reached her career best ranking in 2010 when she rose to number two spot. She also won her career's second Super Series title in the same year. The year 2010 was one of the most successful years for Saina Nehwal as she won five tournaments, including India Open Grand Prix Gold, Indonesian Open, Singapore Open and Hong Kong Super Series and clinched bronze medal at the Asian Badminton Championship. Overall, the year 2010 was one filled with great accolades for Saina Nehwal. Nehwal also became the first Indian woman to win badminton gold at the Commonwealth Games 2010.
