Bhubaneswar: Odisha's youngest International Master (IM) Debashis Das continued his impressive performance in the World Junior (U-20) Chess Championship, forcing Chinese Grandmaster Yu Yangyi to a draw in the seventh round at Titania Hotel in Athens (Greece) yesterday.
Das now has 5.5 points and shares the second place with eight others. He would have been in the lead but for the defeat he suffered against fellow Indian IM Sahaj Grover earlier in the third round. However, Das has kept his medal hope alive, registering five wins so far against Liodakis Konstantinos-Spyros (Grece), Vaicekauskas Gytis (Lithuania), Anton Podolsky (Ukrain), IM Yilmaz Mustafa (Turkey) and Grandmaster Van Kampen Robin (Netherlands).
But Anwesh Upadhyaya, the other Odisha International Master in the fray, continued to struggle in the championship, losing to Stathopoulos Ioannis of Greece in the seventh round. He is now placed at No 81 with three points in his kitty. Anwesh has, so far, won only one game against Du Plessis Heinco (SA), lost two and drawn four.
