Bhubaneswar: Hundred-year-old Govind Chandra Swain, who lost all hopes of standing on his feet after suffering a fractured hip, was able to finally walk home after undergoing a successful surgery at Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) in Bhubaneswar, Swain’s family said he became bed-ridden after several hospitals refused to operate on him in view of his age. As a result, his condition started deteriorating. Finally they decided to bring him to KIMS, where joint replacement surgeon Dr. B.K.Behera gave them hope.
“We had never thought that he would start walking after only three days of operation. It seems like a miracle,” said a family member. A team of doctors, comprising anesthetist Dr. J.C. Mishra, Dr. A Behera and joint replacement surgeon Dr. B. K. Behera, who replaced head and trochanter of his right femur with a femoral prosthesis. The operation was done under the supervision of Dr. U.N. Mishra and Dr. B Panigrahi and CEO, KIMS, Dr. R. N. Samanta.
“ Earlier, Plates and screws were used for fracture in older patients. After such an operation, a patient usually takes at least three months to recover. Then again, there is possibility of the surgery failing to yield the expected result, But the replacement surgery can enable a patient to walk on the third day of surgery,” said a doctor.
These kinds of rare and complicated surgeries can be done in good quality hospitals like KIMS which has efficient anaesthesia team and good ICU set up along with an advanced orthopaedic centre for all complicated fracture treatment and joint replacement surgeries.
