Report by Pravuprasad Routray; New Delhi: Salman Khan's Ek Tha Tiger continues to roar at the box office as the film moves towards a humongous total. The movies that broke all records and amassed over Rs. 33 crore on opening day.
The romantic thriller released on Independence Day and trade pundits are expecting the collections to increase during the long weekend. The movie is doing excellent business. There was a lot of hype about the Salmanand Katrina romance.
Ek Tha Tiger released worldwide on August 15, the Independence day of India. It was screened in 3300 screens over the country, marking the largest domestic release for a Bollywood film. Around 60 percent of the first weekend sales received an advanced booking prior to the release.
Ek Tha Tiger had a bumper opening, with 100% occupancy at both multiplexes and single screens and it has shattered records all over by recording capacity on the widest release ever and collected around 31.23 crore (US$5.65 million) on its first day. Its a 40% jump from the previous record which was 22 crore (US$3.98 million) nett approx set by Agneepath (2012). It fell in the single screens across India on its second day and collected around 14.50 crore (US$2.62 million). Ek Tha Tiger fell further on its third day and collected around 11.50 crore (US$2.08 million) thus taken its three days total to around 57.50 crore (US$10.41 million) range which is a new record for the weekend.
The story is by Aditya Chopra and the film's screenplay has been co-written by Kabir Khan and well-known journalist-turned-lyricist-writer Neelesh Misra. The films begins with a mysterious bachelor (Salman Khan) lived in a government employee neighbourhood about whom his neighbours know nothing. It is because he is India's top spy, an officer with research and analysis wing (RAW), India's external intelligence agency and called Tiger in his codename.
Tiger is sent on a mission to Dublin, Ireland to observe a scientist of Indian origin suspecting of sharing his finding with Pakistan defence establishment. Tiger attempts to meet the scientist but is not successful although he meet with scientist's caretaker Zoya (Katrina Kaif) who is studying at a fictional dance academy. He tries to befriend Zoya and as he begins to get closer to Zoya. He begins to discover his human side. For the first time in his life, Tiger falls in love. Then begins a journey that Tiger and Zoya embark upon battling the dark world of intelligence and espionage that forbids them from falling in love.
