Bhubaneswar: Delegations of all Opposition political parties of the state called on Union ministers Mr Sharad Pawar, Ms Meira Kumar and Mr PR Kyndiah today and submitted a memorandum accusing the state government of failure to protect the life and livelihood of the people of the state.
They reiterated their demand for a CBI probe into the murder of Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati and the communal violence that followed.
The delegation of main Opposition party in the state Assembly, Congress comprising leader of Opposition Mr JB Patnaik, deputy leader Mr Narasingh Mishra and senior leader Mr Srikanta Jena also suggested that a special economic package for trouble-torn Kandhamal district and neighbouring districts of Boudh and Gajapati may be sanctioned by the Union government, in a bid to uplift the socio-economic condition of them.
The leaders, while citing the recent announcement of Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati Smruti Parishad that it would stage an Orissa-bandh on 25 December if the Swami’s murder conspirators are not nabbed by 15 December, urged the Union government to take action to this end.
“The present Naveen Patnaik-led government is an instrument in the hands of Sangha Parivar and their cohorts, which is out to destroy the communal harmony in the state to further their narrow political interest”, the memorandum of Congress read.
The leaders again raised their demand of the CBI probe and wondered why the state government is afraid of the same.
The CPI-M also came down heavily on the state government for the failure in protecting the citizens. Furthermore, it also denounced the role of the union government. “The Union government did not send the para-military forces in time to the state. Had the force reached in time, the damage would have been much less”, the party said.
“The Union government wanted to topple the state government through imposition of Article-365 for its own narrow political ends”, the memorandum said.
The other demands of CPI-M included formation of a state minority commission, formation of village/panchayat-level peace committees , time-bound disposal of riot-related criminal cases, deployment of para-military forces till normalcy returns and a comprehensive master-plan to improve the socio-economic condition of the people.
These parities apart, Samruddha Orissa and other political parties met the union minister and submitted memoranda detailing their observations, demands and suggestions.
