Orissadiary.com: Dr Mohanty, Why you quit lucrative IAS career?

Jatish Mohanty: I was overwhelmed with the sad plight of our poor brothers and sisters of Orissa. Rampant poverty (Then 47.15% of our population were below poverty line) and very poor ranking in almost all socio-economic indicators among the Indian States in spite of huge natural and human resources made me feel that something is seriously lacking in the state. From my experience and exposure in Andhra Pradesh I genuinely realized that given focussed vision and serious commitment it would be possible to eradicate poverty from Orissa. Some body has to bail the cat. I did so by taking voluntary retirement from IAS 7 years ahead of my superannuation.
