With its abundant mineral resources, long coastline, plentiful inland waters, diverse forest wealth, Orissa have potential to become an industry-rich State. The State Government has reaffirmed its commitment for transforming Orissa into a vibrant industrial State. Orissa is endowed with a variety of vast mineral deposits and therefore occupies a prominent place in the country as a mineral rich State. Abundant reserves of high-grade Iron ore, Coal, Bauxite, Chromites along with other minerals such as Limestone, Dolomite, Manganese, Tin, Nickel, Vanadium, Gemstone, Granite, Graphite, Lead, Gold etc., are extensively available in the State. This has opened up immense possibilities for locating mineral based industries for manufacture of Steel, Cement, Alumina/ Aluminum etc., along with setting up other auxiliary and ancillary downstream industries.
Aluminum:
Orissa's strength in the aluminum sector is the availability of quality bauxite deposits of about 1.53 billion tons, existing alumina/aluminum production units, port facilities, power availability, new projects in the power sector, new alumina and aluminum projects, etc. which will also pave the way for aluminum ancillary & downstream projects. NALCO is the major producer of alumina with its plant at Damanjodi, besides it has its aluminum smelter and power plant at Angul along with the aluminum unit of INDAL at Hirakud. The other major domestic players like Sterlite group is setting up its aluminum complex at Kalahandi & Jharsuguda while Utkal Alumina at Rayagada & Aditya Aluminum at Koraput- Rayagada and Sambalpur. Some of the potential ancillary & downstream projects can be:
Ancillary Industries:
Aluminum Fluoride, Calcined Petroleum Coke, Coal Tar Pitch, Calcined Lime, Ammonium nitrate, Refractory bricks, Grinding media, Caustic soda
Aluminum Downstream
Fused Alumina, Special Alumina / refractory raw material, Aluminum & non-ferrous casting for automobiles, slugs & circles powder, rolled products, wheels extrusions foils ,castings, Alloys, sections, sheets, home appliances, strips etc.
Steel:
The State Government has signed MOUs with 45 companies including Arcelor-Mittal, POSCO, Tata Steel, Jindals, Bhusans, Essar groups for a capacity of about 70 million tpa. Out of these steel projects, around 20 units have commenced partial production. In view of the existing (RSP) as well as proposed steel projects some of the potential ancillary & downstream projects can be:
Hot rolled coils, Strips, Cold rolling of hot rolled products, Cold – rolled strip. Forging products. Long products including bars, rods and wires, structural shapes and rails, and tubes, Flat products including plates, hot-rolled strip and sheets, and cold-rolled strips and sheets.
