Dr Ranjan Dash, the proud of Orissa, earns international fame

Report by Pragyan Das, Bhubaneswar : Dr Ranjan Dash, an Oriya boy has proved to become rarest among rares in earning name and fame not only for himself, but also for our state Orissa.

Ranjan is the son of Mrs Ambika Dash & Dr Benudhar Dash. His family lived in Hillapalli village of Sambalpur. Dr Ranjan Dash is the co-founder, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at Y-Carbon, INC, a company based on his doctoral research at Drexel. Under his leadership, Y-Carbon was able to raise $1,200,000 in the last one and half year and created six jobs. Ranjan has over 8 years of work experience in different fields ranging from ceramic manufacturing and software development to research and development in materials science.

In 1998, he graduated with honors in B.E (Ceramics Engineering) from  National Institute of Technology,Rourkela, India. Ranjan is an alumnus of the A.J.Nanotechnology Institute, where he did his research on the core technology that Y-Carbon is commercializing. He has a Ph.D in Materials Science and Engineering. He was the first student at Drexel University to pursue dual degree of a Ph.D. and MBA, both within 4 years.

He was awarded the 2006 Award for the Best Dissertation by a student in engineering and physical science of Drexel University. He was also awarded the 2007’s international Carbon Prize, sponsored by Elsevier, for his doctoral research. Recently, Ranjan received Drexel University’s 2009 Young Alummi Entrepreneur Award. Ranjan’s innovative work has resulted in a family of novel carbon materials which lead to 2009 R & D100 Award. Ranjan has published 10 journal papers and has 4 patents pending.
